Serious Card Games
Nap (or Napoleon) Whist is a five-card trick-taking game where players bid for the right to choose trumps and lead. The minimum bid is Nap (winning all five tricks) rising to x2, x3 etc. which increases the stake, which in this case correspon to points It's an all-or-nothing game where all your opponents try to defeat you.
Nomination Whist (or Nommy for short) is a trick-taking game and a whist variant, played over sixteen hands with a varying number of cards per hand. The objective is to score points by bidding (or nominating) the number of tricks that you will win in each hand and have the highest score at the end of the game. Trumps for each hand are chosen by the player with the highest bid.
Big Ships Noms is a four player points-based trick-taking game where players must nominate (or bid) how many tricks they will win in each hand. There are twenty-five hands in each game with the number of cards varying from thirteen down to one and back to thirteen again. Trumps are rotated each hand including no trumps hands. Points are won by winning tricks and making your bid.
Knockout Whist is a classic and simple trick-taking game without contracts or bids. There are up to seven hands in each game with the number of cards varying from seven down to one. Players are eliminated if they fail to win at least one trick in a hand until there is only one player left, the winner.
Criibage (or Crib) is another classic card game. This is a five card cariation for 1-3 opponents. As with all Crib games the objective is score as many points as possible in each hand in order to reach the magic 121 to win the match. Points are scored by making 15's or 31, or by getting pairs/triples/quadruples of a rank., flushes of the same suit and runs.
Newbury arket is a four player variation of the game Newmarket but which introduces elements of strategy. Play is as per Newmarket but: there is no dead or dummy hand - each player throws away three cards and when a stop occurs the next card played must be of a different colour to the last card played but can be any card provided it is not a “horse”
Kristoon is a variation on the classic Blackjack/Pontoon theme where the objective is to get as close to but without exceeding a total of twenty-one. But Kristoon differs in that players can:
⁃ Only have a maximum of three cards
⁃ Offer a card to their opponents with the aim of bettering their hand
⁃ Swap an offered card to one in their to better their hand
Go Boom! is a classic trick-taking card game for four players where the objective is to get rid of all your cards similar to Wot or Uno. Players can follow suit or rank but must pick up from the deck if they cannot follow and until they can. The highest ranked card of the led suit wins the trick and the winner of it leads the next card until someobe has no cards left (Boom!) and wins the game.
Seriously Silly Games
Hemball is an unusual platformer where you control the platform rather than the characters. The objective is simple: get the balls into the right trucks. Use logic to guide the balls down to their waiting trucks by activating the doors in the playing area. If you can get through the 23 levels in your first month then things will get even harder.Think of a cross between Testris, Donkey Kong and Lemmings! It's a game where you must program and re-program the platform to route the balls to their destinations.
Jail.Break - There's a mass breakout underway at the local jail and as the perimeter guard it's your duty to stop the inmates from escaping. Tap quickly to keep them in in this 'Whack-A-Con' game! Catch the inmates in the act before they escape by closing their escape routes with a tap.As you progress the inmates will find more ingenious ways to escape, will coordinate more and more in their attempts and will attempt to trick you too! You'll need quick wits and quick thumbs in this whack-a-mole inspired game.
YouFeed - It's the matching game with a difference. Feed the animals the right food to clear them off and feed bonus animal (or use the bonus food) to score - the more you feed the higher the score! Clearing the screen will take you to the next level where, of course, things will start to get harder. If you fail to complete the level in the time then you’ll lose a life, lose all three and you’ll be demoted back a level and your score will be penalised.
Supermarket Dash - Remember when there was nothing in the supermarket? Well, Benson has run out of food and although the shelves are empty there are still a few things to be had. Help him avoid his fellow shoppers, security guards, obstacles and even the odd vulture whilst stocking up on a few basic essentials on the way. With a little skill you can even snatch them out of the hands of others for extra points! The longer you last the harder it will get - beware of the hoarders with toilet roll and pasta...
Serious Skills Needed
Groats - At last a Shove Ha'penny style game with an actual shove action.
It's definitely not a handheld game! You'll need a flat surface like a table, desk, bar or similar to place your device on while you give it a shove.
To play Groats you'll need:
Your iPhone or iPad
A flat stable surface with an edge (table, desk, shelf, bar etc.) Perhaps not the best game on a boat or plane!
Quite a bit of skill!
This game is loosely based on the old pub game of Shove Ha'penny and features a real "shove' mechanic - no having to flip the coins up the board with your finger in this one. You have to give your device a gentle shove to make your groat travel up the board and this can be as fun or frustrating as playing real Shove Ha'penny. Just make sure your device can travel a little across the surface.
It's a two player game with players taking turns from opposite ends of the board. Like Shove Ha'penny, the objective is to score points by landing your groats in the 'beds' each of which is between two horizontal lines and without touching them. The winner is the first to score three points in each of the five beds.
There are four modes of play: Two player on same device, two player online game, single payer practice mode and single player blast game.
Play the classic traditional English pub game of Shove Ha'penny as close as possible on a device - real shove action included!
Games can be customised with the following options:
Select number of beds on the board (five to nine)
Select one or three in a bed scoring
Standard and Oxford variants supported
Two player game on the same device or play with friends over Game Center's online playing mode
Shove Ha'penny is the game where you shove five coins up a board with the objective of scoring points by landing them in the 'beds' between the lines with the winner being the first to fill all their beds.
It's not a handheld game! You'll need a flat surface like a table, desk, bar or similar to place your device on while you give it a shove.
